Hey all. So here is the first "on the road" blog. Our first week has been a mixed bag of sights. New York was awesome think we walked a few milion miles so the fitness plan has got off to a good start. The weather has been perfect so we spent most of the time just wandering around Central Park, hiring bikes to ride round the park and just chilling in the park watching baseball games. We ended up meeting many South Africans in a bar in Soho to watch the Super 14 finals (Barks we bumped into Kerry your old housemate - small world!) We also found a cool rock n roll bar where you just chuck you peanut shells on the ground. But it hadn't just been all about the bars...we visited the Natural History Mueseum and the Mueseum of Modern Art but that was closed so we found another great little bar called Livebait.
Next it was road trip time. We didn't get off to a great start - we were delayed by 3 hours as Shands didn't call to confirm the rental car pick up time! Ended up driving all the way to Niagara Falls to avoid staying in some arb town only to discover that Niagara Falls town is a real hill billy town. I think our motel room doubled as a curry house but the shower pressure was good and it was cheap.
The falls are amazing we saw them illumated at night from the Canadian side and by day from the US side. If anyone plans to visit Niagara I would recommend staying on the Canadian side. We did the Cave of the Winds tour which sends you in a elevator to the bottom of the falls and you can basically stand under the falls if you can handle it given that it has a flow rate of 225,000 litres per second. Not for the scared or faint hearted (or the weak and fat :)).
We also took a drive up to Lake Ontario - one of the great lakes- and discovered a town called Lewiston on the Niagara River a playground for the rich they have all the toys from jet boats to yatchs - my kinda town!
Next day we were back on the road to Southern Pennsylvania where we stopped in a town called Hershey build by mr Hershey himself. The town is a lot like Pleasantville and almost surreal. We went on a tour of the Hershey chocolate factory and then headed to York for the night. In York we went to the Harley Davidson factory and walked the assembly line. The robots and pressing machines were awesome - the bikes were pretty cool too.
Next stop dinner with the Obamas in Washington...
